Spider Web Studies, I Wanna Be Sedated and Speedy Tuscan White Bean Soup

Hello lovely readers, welcome to the weekend blog post. I hope you caught some of the gorgeous winter sunshine that we had today! Tonight I give you "Spider Web Studies, I Wanna Be Sedated and Speedy Tuscan White Bean Soup." Happy reading xo♥
Spider Web Studies
On a misty winters morning, the spider webs in our garden were glistening with dewdrops. I want to show you all some of the images I captured.
The dewdrops caught the morning sunlight and look like tiny jewels suspended in the spiderwebs.
Nature is just so beautiful sometimes don't you think?
I Wanna Be Sedated
The first Ramones song I ever remember hearing was "I Wanna Be Sedated." Sadly this week, the last surviving member and original drummer of the pioneering Punk band The Ramones, lost his battle with cancer. Ramones Lead vocalist Joey passed away in 2001, Dee Dee passed away in 2002 and Johnny passed away in 2004. There is a great article on Triple J here :
http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/musicnews/s4045059.htm
Some interesting Ramones trivia...
1. All members of the band adopted the surname Ramone although they weren’t related. The Ramones finally disbanded in 1996 after a show at the Palace in Hollywood.
2. After 2,261 shows The Ramones called it quits in 1996. Their last Australian visit was in 1994 as one of the headliners of the Big Day Out
3. The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
Readers, I hope you enjoy this fine video clip

Speedy Tuscan White Bean Soup
This soup is just delicious. Hearty yet light, perfect for a quick winter mid-week dinner. I didn't have Cannellini Beans in the cupboard, and substituted tinned Butter Beans instead. I also used lean bacon instead of Pancetta. The fresh time and squeeze of lemon really add another dimension to this soup. You can find the original recipe here: speedy tuscan white bean soup

Speedy Tuscan White Bean Soup
Ingredients:
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large leek, trimmed, halved, washed, chopped
3 garlic cloves, crushed
1 large sebago potato, peeled, chopped
2 x 425g cans cannellini beans, drained, rinsed
1 litre salt-reduced chicken stock
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
3 teaspoons lemon juice
4 slices pancetta lemon wedges, to serve

Method:
Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Add leek and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until leek is soft.

Add potato and beans. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add stock. Increase heat to high. Cover and bring to the boil. Boil for 7 to 10 minutes or until potato is tender. Remove from heat. Stand for 10 minutes.

Blend or process half the soup until smooth. Return soup to pan. Add thyme and lemon juice. Return to heat. Simmer for 5 minutes or until heated through.

Meanwhile, heat remaining oil in a frying pan over high heat. Cook pancetta for 2 minutes each side or until browned and crisp. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel. Break pancetta into large pieces.

Ladle soup into serving bowls. Top with pancetta. Season with pepper. Serve with lemon wedges.

That wraps up the weekend blog post dear readers, I hope you enjoyed "

Friday Friends - Local Artists - Anne North

Happy Friday once again lovely readers. What have your collective weeks held? I have nothing really to report from Maddabling HQ, life is busy and the weather still chilly. This week I have a special guest blogger; (it's always nice to feature a friend) meet a very talented local artist and advocate for local arts - Anne North!

The art that Anne creates is close to my heart, featuring our beautiful coastline, forests and native flora. We are trying to create a "modern" garden at our place, with a focus on local native plants and we like to walk the coastal walk trails, so you can understand why these pieces resonate so strongly with me.
Read her story for yourself and see more of her beautiful paintings below. I now hand over the blogging reigns for Anne to tell you more about her work. Have a wonderful weekend everyone, see you all on Sunday (promise I won't forget) for the weekend blog post xo♥ Happy Reading!
The Anne North Diaries
What is the real reason of painting? I do not feel any real need to prove my ‘hobby’, a hobby that I really don’t feel I have any control over. I do know of people who are hobby artists – they paint when they have a free moment; they have their lovely studio, they paint what is pretty – nothing wrong with that.
I wish I could be like that; my studio ends up being the whole house, oil paints all over the kitchen table, easels and canvases spread across the lounge floor. For me painting has always been a compulsion that hits my brain and goes on for as long as I am in the ‘zone’.
Something that I do know is that on some level I want to connect to nature. A statement that could not be more twee. But after painting all my life I have come to realize that there is nothing wrong with being ‘the sentimental bloke’ As a human I do not ‘have’ feelings, I ‘am’ my feelings – everything else is just chemicals and flesh.
And this is what it all comes down to, a need to express physically how those feelings connect to this outside, experiential world. I paint my Karri trees and Southern forests in a translucent manner, which requires many glazes, this shows their transitory temperament on this earth, just like ourselves – its something that we share. The physical is nothing, everything is just spirit.
To the more mundane – I had my first solo exhibition was at ‘The Arts House Gallery’ in Northbridge in 1990, and have been exhibiting in solo and group shows ever since. For the last few years I have been involved in a ‘pop-up’ shop with a number of other local artists. We do the shop just before Christmas to make a few bucks, deliberately making small and cheap hand made art products, to great success. I am on a number of committees, the most important being Newarts, which organize ‘Sculpture in the Harbour’ – a sculpture exhibition that has the sculptures embedded into the shoreline of the Princess Royal Harbour.
I also have fun being involved in the local roller derby group, for which I am Secretary.

Friday Friends - West Australian Makers - Djinda

Hello readers, it is Friday once again. The weather has been a bit wild and woolly down here this week, it has had me reaching for hot herbal tea and slippers. How is the weather where you are? At least there has been rain, it's good for the garden right? I will be road testing another new soup recipe in the weekend blog post - stay tuned!

This week it is my pleasure to introduce to you a new Friday Friend and fabulous West Australian Maker, meet Femke of Djinda
Djinda has the most beautiful handmade things for children for wear and play. The colours are often bright and colourful, and the designs very practical. Let me share a few favourites with you now. This super sweet Raindrops skirt is made from screen printed linen in green, yellow and white with an elastic waist.
I love the simple elegant style of the CIRCLE felt garland in neutral greys and white, which measures approximately 2 metres.
This dolls quilt with pillow is just darling - it's hand quilted with purple backing and orange gingham binding, measuring 40x40 cm. Perfect for any little girls playroom.
Dear readers, I invite you now to take a break from the everyday chores and read A Stitch in Time with Djinda. Have a fantastic weekend, stay warm and dry. Happy Reading xo♥
A Stitch in Time with Djinda
I started sewing when I was pregnant with my first baby. My nesting never involved cleaning, but always creating. By the time I was pregnant with number two things revved up a bit. Then when my youngest started school I had a little bit more time on my hands and this is when my thoughts turned to something grander. This became djinda a little shop selling wares mainly for children. The name djinda means “star” in Noongar the local Aboriginal language and is my way of honouring this land where I create.
Djinda came about from a deep need to create a happy and free play environment for my two girls. Inspired by Steiner and Montessori philosophies, natural materials and bright colours, I set about creating, cutting, printing and stitching. I love watching my kids play and am constantly amazed by their imaginations. I want their imaginations and their sense of fun to be ignited by my crowns, hand kites, cushions and garlands.
Djinda’s range of hand made creations for the nursery, playroom and home are made with love and care by Femke Knol. Only natural materials — wool, linen, cotton and felt— are used. All of my pieces are unique and created in my home studio in North Fremantle.
I am inspired by happy, bright colours, which is funny as I almost always dress in black, grey, blue and white myself. My current inspiration obsession are artists Guy Grey-Smith and Anya Brock. I am slightly in love with their use of colour. My Dutch roots also come into play— a need for bright and happy colours started at birth.
Opening up my little store has been an amazing ride so far. I love holing myself up in my little studio to work but I have also had to step out of my comfort zone and learn about all about the business-y stuff. I am also very pleased to be having a little stall at the Made on the Left Market at the State Theatre Centre in Northbridge, Perth, WA Sunday 27th July 10-4. Hopefully I will see some of you there!

Pots of Gold, Fall-ing Down and Roasted Cauliflower, Leek + Cashew Soup

Hello readers, apologies for the late "weekend" blog post but have been a little out of sorts. Tonight I share with you Pots of Gold, Fall-ing Down and Roasted Cauliflower, Leek + Cashew Soup. Happy Reading xo♥
Pots of Gold
I was amazed to see a Rainbow form from the sea before my eyes on the weekend. It seemed to come right out of the ocean. Maybe there really is a pot of gold hidden beneath the waves...
Fall-ing Down
A dear friend of mine shared a social media status recently, and the challenge was to be allocated a letter of the alphabet and share a song accordingly. "J". So being a proud West Australian, I chose a little Perth band by the name of Jebediah. I have seen Jebediah live and they put on a damn good show. Who doesn't love men in kilts, bagpipes and Indie music from the early noughties? Enjoy the music video "Fall Down" by Jebediah
Roasted Cauliflower Leek + Cashew Soup
I found this yummy vegetarian soup recipe at http://www.loveandlemons.com. It serves about 3 as a main, 4-5 as a starter or side. It is dairy free but still very creamy and flavoursome. A different style of winter warmer.
Roasted Cauliflower Leek + Cashew Soup
Ingredients
2 cups chopped cauliflower
2-3 leeks, white and very light green parts, chopped (about 1 to 1.5 cups)
2 cloves of garlic olive oil, for drizzling
1/2 cup raw, unsalted, un-roasted cashews, soaked overnight and drained
1.5 teaspoons miso paste (or season with salt if you don't have any)
Leaves from a few sprigs of marjoram or thyme
3 cups of water
A splash of olive oil (to blend into the soup)
1/8 teaspoon smoked paprika (or more to taste)
Squeeze of lemon
Pinch of Red Chilli Flakes

Method:
Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Spread cauliflower, leeks and garlic on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Drizzle vegetables with olive oil and sprinkle with a few pinches of salt & pepper. Roast for 20-30 minutes, or until golden, make sure to rotate the tray halfway through cooking.

Use a stick blender or add to your blender or food processor the roasted vegetables, drained cashews, marjoram leaves, miso paste, a squeeze of lemon and half the water (1.5 cups). Blend until pureed. Add olive oil, paprika, and the rest of the water. Blend again. Taste and adjust seasonings.

Pour into a medium saucepan and heat just until it's warm. Stir in a little more water if it's too thick. Serve with bread on the side. Garnish with fresh Marjoram or Thyme Sprigs.

Readers, I hope you enjoyed Pots of Gold, Fall-ing Down and Roasted Cauliflower, Leek + Cashew Soup. See you tomorrow for a new Wednesday Wishes blog post x
